About

KATHERINE M. CARTER (she/her) is a stage director of theatre and opera, celebrated for staging work that is as emotionally alive as it is visually striking — from grand opera and new musicals to reimagined classics. Her work spans companies including Wolf Trap Opera, the Canadian Opera Company, Alley Theatre, San Francisco Opera, On Site Opera, Sarasota Opera, the Aspen Music Festival, The Rose Theatre, and the New York Musical Theatre Festival, among others.

Frequently sought after for her work with young artists, Katherine has served as a guest director at some of opera's leading training programs, including the Ryan Opera Center at Lyric Opera of Chicago, Santa Fe Opera, and Wolf Trap Opera, and has led productions and workshops at The Juilliard School, Manhattan School of Music, Mannes Opera, Rice University, and Carnegie Mellon University.

An advocate for new work, Katherine co-founded The MITTEN Lab, a residency in northern Michigan for emerging theatre artists, and previously founded The Other Mirror Theatre Company, dedicated to socially conscious adaptations for the stage.

Katherine has been awarded fellowships with New Georges, The Drama League, and Playwrights Horizons.

Katherine is a certified Intimacy Director through IDC Professionals and serves as an Intimacy Director for the Metropolitan Opera. As a proud consent-forward director, she believes the foundations of intimacy work belong in every production.
